Kansas City Rodent Removal Tip:

Tips to Find and Remove a Dead Rat
If you can smell the distinctive smell of a dead rat in your home or garage, you more than likely are looking for a way to get rid of it. Whether it ate some rat poison and died in a hard-to-find spot, or it just naturally died somewhere, the smell of dead rodents is not pleasant. It can oftentimes be hard to locate a dead rat, so it is important to learn some tips that might help you out. Continue reading to find out about some tips to find and remove a dead rat from your home or any other building.

Safety First
The first point that needs to be made before you attempt any of the finding and removal of a dead rodent is safety. Rats and mice carry hundreds of nasty, potentially deadly diseases that can seriously injure or even kill a human. One example is rat-bite fever, which is a bacterial infection that can shut down your breathing and potentially kill you. Another serious disease is hantavirus. This viral infection has no cure and it kills around 40% of everyone who contracts the disease. As can be seen, handling rats, even when they are dead, is a serious business. At the bare minimum, you will want to wear gloves, a respirator, and protective clothing. You really cannot be too cautious when it comes to coming into contact with rodents.

Sniff It Out
You should be able to smell the dead rat, as that is probably what tipped you off to having a dead rat in your home in the first place. One of the best ways you can go about finding a hidden dead rat is to simply use your nose. When you get closer to the rat, the smell should continually get worse until you find it. If you can smell it in multiple rooms, that is probably due to the air circulation and ventilation systems of your home. Simply search rooms until it smells the worst.

Look Around
One of the most obvious methods for finding a dead rat is to figure out where the rat was likely living before it died. If you can find any signs of rat damage, this should lead you close to the rat. If you find droppings, hair, or grease marks, you might be even closer. A great place to look before you have to start putting holes in your walls would be in the attic. Many times, rats live in attics because of the warmth of the insulation.

This is one of the worst parts of the removal process. Hopefully, you have found the area where you think the rat is close to, either by visual inspection or through your nose locating it. Simply make a small hole at first, just to look around and see if you can see the dead rat. You may need to use a small flashlight to see well. You may also have to make these small holes several times until you find the rat.

Remove the Rat
Hopefully, you found the rat by making your small holes in the wall. Now you need to make a bigger hole to get the rat out of there. Go ahead and make the hole. Now it is important to have doubled up garbage bags on hand so you can quickly transfer the rodent to the garbage. Simply seal up the bag and throw it away. Be very careful when taking off your protective gear that you do not touch your face or come into contact with your gloves.

Air It Out
The smell may remain in your home or garage for a while, as the scent of decaying rodents is very pungent. Simply open up some windows and get some fans going and the smell should leave fairly quickly. Now that you have disposed of the dead rat, you can finally get back to your normal life again.
